Area of natural beauty

Brachter Wald

Brachter Wald

The “Brachter Wald” is the eastern entrance to the municipality of Beesel from Germany. This green border crossing, which is not accessible to cars, is an ideal starting point for walks or bicycle tours through areas such as Meerlebroek and Brachter Wald. Several horseback riding routes are also available. The Witte Stein near Reuver is one of the entrances to the Brachter Wald. Until 1996, this area was hermetically sealed as an ammunition depot of the British forces. Recently, however, the area has been re-opened and you can enjoy hiking there.

A unique heath landscape

In recent decades a unique heath landscape has developed on the very nutrient-poor and dry sandy soils. The area is home to extremely rare and endangered plants and animals, as well as many big game. Since the Brachter Wald is closed to motorized traffic, you can walk and cycle leisurely here. Various hiking, cycling and Nordic walking routes have been set out.

With experienced depot guides you can take a cycling excursion from the Witte Stein border crossing, weather permitting. During this excursion you will be extensively informed about the military past and the nature reserve. The VVV Beesel/Reuver has clear maps with routes through the Brachter Wald and offers information about the bicycle excursions.
